Mercado de Triana

Mercado de Triana stands on Plaza del Altozano, built in 1823 over the ruins of the Castillo de San Jorge, the Almohad fortress that later served as the seat of the Spanish Inquisition. Closed for renovation and reopened in 2001, the market now holds around 100 stalls selling seafood, jamón, cheese, produce and spices across roughly 4,000 square metres, with a small on-site museum displaying the archaeological remains found during the rebuild. Several stalls double as informal tapas bars where shoppers eat standing at the counter.
