About
Laid out by Roman legionnaires more than 2,000 years ago in the Latin Quarter, Rue Mouffetard has been a market street since the Middle Ages, when farmers from the surrounding countryside brought produce to sell here. Baron Haussmann's 19th-century redevelopment of Paris bypassed it, leaving its narrow, sloping run largely intact. Ernest Hemingway, who lived at number 74, called it a 'wonderful, narrow crowded market street' in A Moveable Feast. Fishmongers, cheesemongers, bakers and greengrocers still line the lower end of the street near Place de la Contrescarpe.
