Preveli Viewpoint

This lookout sits above the mouth of the Kourtaliotiko Gorge near the Libyan Sea coast, close to the 16th-century Moni Preveli monastery in southern Rethymno. From the road above Preveli Beach the view takes in the wild palm forest along the Megas Potamos river as it winds down to the sea, framed by the gorge's limestone walls. The monastery itself sheltered Allied soldiers during the evacuation of Crete in 1941, in the Second World War.
