Pasar Beringharjo

Pasar Beringharjo has traded on this site since 1758, when Sultan Hamengkubuwono I established a market on land that had been a banyan-tree forest (the name means roughly 'welfare of the banyan forest'). The current Art Deco market halls, built by a Dutch construction firm, were completed in 1926 on Jalan Malioboro at the edge of the Kraton complex. Ground-floor stalls sell batik, spices and jamu (traditional herbal drinks); the upper floor turns into a food court by afternoon, with gudeg and other Javanese dishes cooked to order.
