Mercato di Testaccio

Mercato di Testaccio traces back to the late 19th century, when it supplied the butchers, porters and families working around the nearby Mattatoio slaughterhouse from a site on Piazza Testaccio. In 2012 the market moved into a purpose-built modern hall a short walk away, on Via Beniamino Franklin, but kept its neighborhood character -- mostly Roman shoppers buying produce, meat, cheese and fresh pasta rather than tourists. A row of ready-to-eat stalls serves supplì, panini and other Roman street-food staples alongside the fresh-food counters.
