Opened in 1874 in a cast-iron and glass hall designed by Giuseppe Mengoni, architect of Milan's Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Mercato Centrale is Florence's main covered food market. The ground floor still works as it did in the 19th century, with butchers, cheesemongers, fishmongers and fresh-pasta stalls trading daily in the San Lorenzo neighbourhood. In 2014 the upper floor was converted into a food hall with more than twenty artisan counters, but the ground-floor market itself has been trading continuously for a century and a half.
