Mercat de Santa Caterina

Built in 1845 on the ruins of a Dominican convent destroyed a decade earlier, Santa Caterina was Barcelona's first covered market and still supplies the Born/Ribera neighborhood. A 2005 renovation by architects Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue gave it its landmark undulating roof of 325,000 colored ceramic tiles, while excavation during the works uncovered the medieval convent's remains, now displayed inside. Stalls sell fresh produce, fish and meat, with a handful of counters serving tapas and market-fresh lunches.
