About

Opened in 1914 on the site of an earlier 1837 market, Mercado do Bolhão is Porto's best-known covered market, its name recalling a fountain that once stood here and made the water 'boil' with bubbles. After years of decline the building underwent a major restoration, reopening in 2022 with its original wrought-iron structure and skylights recovered. Butchers, fishmongers, greengrocers and flower stalls fill the ground floor around a central courtyard, while food stalls and small eateries selling francesinha, bacalhau and fresh seafood occupy the upper level.
