Olhão Market

Olhão's twin market buildings on Avenida 5 de Outubro, built in red brick between 1912 and 1916 on the site of an 1866 predecessor, sit right on the waterfront facing the Ria Formosa. One building is dedicated to fish -- the largest fish market in the Algarve, supplied by the town's own fishing fleet -- and the other to fruit, vegetables and produce. Olhão grew into a major fishing port through the 20th century, and the market still opens early each morning to locals and restaurant buyers before tourists arrive, with the freshest catch usually gone by mid-morning.
