Mercado da Ribeira

Lisbon's main food market has traded on this Cais do Sodre site since 1892, when an iron-framed hall with a large oriental dome replaced the open-air fish-unloading quays that had worked here since Roman times. An 1893 fire destroyed part of the building, which was later rebuilt and enlarged. The ground floor still runs as a traditional market from 6am to 2pm, with stallholders -- some trading for decades -- selling fish, fruit, vegetables, flowers, bread and cheese; many of Lisbon's chefs buy their fish here.
